Introducing Xevo

A Letter from Dan Gittleman, CEO of Xevo

Today, I am excited to announce that we are changing the name of our company from UIEvolution to Xevo and have acquired Seattle-based machine learning startup Corporation.

When UIEvolution was founded in 2000, it was to create intuitive, connected software on devices that people encounter as part of their everyday lives. We’ve worked tirelessly towards that goal for the past 16 years and will continue to do so moving forward with our innovative connected car software: as Xevo.

Over the past several years, our company has grown beyond user experiences and interfaces. So, in connection with the Surround transaction, we are changing the name of our company to Xevo Inc. The name XevoTM (pronounced zee-vo) marks our expanded focus beyond user interface evolution to encompass a broader user experience, applying a wide range of connected car technologies that include deep learning, computer vision, machine learning, automotive data analytics, and cloud services. You might say we have evolved from driving automotive UI to driving automotive AI.

Estimates from the GSMA anticipate that there will be over 60 million connected cars on the road in five years and BI Intelligence published a report predicting that car-focused telecom, hardware, and software will drive $51 billion in annual revenue by 2018. In-car connectivity is rapidly becoming a competitive necessity in the auto industry.

However, the automotive sector has been sleepy for years. We’ve seen advancements in safety and creature comforts, but nothing too groundbreaking—until recently. With Tesla’s breakthroughs in energy efficiency and indications that autonomous vehicles will eventually be a reality, cars have become a major focus of innovation, and manufacturers are investing billions of dollars to gain an edge. Cars are the ultimate mobile devices and there are an abundance of opportunities to create a much more connected experience for both drivers and automobile manufacturers. That is the opportunity that Xevo is embracing head on.

Xevo is building a next-generation connected car experience. We are already a global leader in connected car software, with automotive IoT deployments via tier one partnerships with major auto manufacturers. These trusted relationships provide incredible opportunities to make waves in the connected car space.

Joining forces with and its brilliant team will fuel our progress towards our goals. John Ludwig, who was Surround’s CEO, also founded Ignition Partners and spent 11 years at Microsoft. John Cordell, who was Surround’s Software Architect, also worked at Microsoft where he was one of the original developers of Internet Explorer, and cofounded Avogadro, which was acquired by OpenWave.

Surround’s head of Big Data Sam McKelvie spent many years as a Senior Principal Engineer at in Amazon Web Services EC2, virtual networking (VPC) and relational database services (RDS), where he designed much of the scalable distributed log-based storage system behind AWS Aurora—the fastest growing product in AWS history. He also worked at Microsoft and co-founded Avogadro. These are just a few of the data science experts who will join Xevo through this acquisition.

We are thrilled about our new name and partnership with and look forward to pushing Xevo forward together. This is just the beginning.
